Southern Alberta Training Conference

In an effort to build capacity in Alberta and the Northwest Territories, we are hosting our first ever Training Conference in Lethbridge, AB from April 22 to May 9, alongside the Alberta Association of Recreational Facility Personnel (AARFP) conference. If you are a pool leader planning to attend the conference, this could be a great opportunity to bring along a staff member or two to get some new certifications.

The following courses will be held during the conference:

Original Trainer Course (April 22-24)

This course is intended for experienced Instructors ready to step up to the next level of leadership and instruction. The Trainer course prepares Trainers to apply level 4 leadership competencies and strategies to support Instructors learning to teach and evaluate Lifesaving Society Programs

Prerequisites:

  • Application to the Society
  • Current Lifesaving Instructor certification
  • Demonstrated level 3 leadership competencies
  • Minimum 2 years of teaching experience

Apprenticeship: after course. Apply to apprentice on original Instructor/Coach course.

Dates: April 22 (Mon) – April 24 (Wed)

  • Monday: 5 – 9 PM
  • Tuesday/Wednesday: 9 AM – 5 PM

Trainer Recertification Course (April 25)

This course is intended for existing Lifesaving Society Trainers in any program stream. The Trainer Recertification course evaluates Trainer level 4 leadership competencies, facilitates networking and provides Trainers with updates from the Lifesaving Society. This course recertifies all streams a Trainer currently holds.

Prerequisites:

  • Completion of all mandatory updates (as required)
  • Applicable current Instructor certification(s)

Apprenticeship: N/A

Date: April 25 (Thursday), 1 – 5 PM

Host: Cor Van Raay YMCA, Lethbridge (Multipurpose Room 8)

SwimAbilities Instructor (April 26-27)

This course is intended for experienced Swim and/or Lifesaving Instructors seeking to expand their knowledge, skills & judgement when working with swimmers with specialized needs. The SwimAbilities Instructor course prepares Instructors to apply level 2 leadership competencies and strategies designed to teach candidates with specialized needs requiring additional support for skill development and safety routines.

Prerequisites:

  • Current Swim or Lifesaving Instructor certification

Apprenticeship: Completed in-course with real learners

Dates: April 26 (Fri) – April 27 (Sat)

  • Friday: 1 – 5 PM
  • Saturday: 8 AM – 4 PM

Host: Stan Siwik Family Swimming Pool, Lethbridge (Stan Siwik Room)

First Aid Instructor (April 28-29)

This course is intended for experienced Lifesaving Instructors seeking to broaden their leadership skills and abilities to teach Basic & Intermediate First Aid courses.

Prerequisites:

  • Lifesaving Instructor
  • Current Lifesaving Intermediate First Aid OR Government of Alberta Workplace Approved Intermediate First Aid

Apprenticeship: completed in-course

Dates: April 28 (Sun) – April 29 (Mon)

  • Both days: 9 AM - 5 PM

National Lifeguard Instructor (May 8-9)

This course is intended for experienced National Lifeguards with Lifesaving Instructor certification seeking more leadership opportunities and to expand their knowledge, skills and judgement in the area of lifeguarding. National Lifeguard Instructors are responsible for teaching and evaluating candidates participating in the National Lifeguard Pool, Waterpark, Waterfront and Surf programs.

Prerequisites:

  • Current National Lifeguard (any option) held for a minimum 2 years
  • Lifesaving Instructor (need not be current)
  • Experience teaching Lifesaving Society programs is recommended

Apprenticeship: after course (apply to Lifesaving Society to apprentice)

Dates: May 8 (Wed) – May 9 (Thurs)

  • Both days: 9 AM - 5 PM
