Did you know that the slogan for National Drowning Prevention Week 2025 is "#SaferTogether"? Drowning prevention is a shared responsibility, which is why we want to spotlight your water safety tips and stories this summer in our new Water Smart Wednesdays campaign!
Whether it's wearing a lifejacket on a boat, actively supervising young children, or taking swimming lessons, your actions can inspire others to be #SaferTogether this summer!
How It Works
Each Wednesday this summer, we'll share participant-submitted content to our social media that highlights Water Smart messages such as:
Wear a Lifejacket
Be a Water Smart Boater
Within Arms' Reach and Active Supervision
Don't Drink and Drown
Learn to Swim
Swim with a Buddy
These submissions can include photos, videos, personal stories, drawings, poems, and more! Additional submissions will be shared during National Drowning Prevention Week (July 20 - 26)
Submission Criteria
Photo and video submissions should have good resolution.
Photo and video submissions should be original works, and not sourced from stock media, generative artificial intelligence, image archives, or social media not belonging to the participant (unless used with permission)
Submissions should align with the Lifesaving Society's mission, vision, and values, such as equity, diversity, and inclusion.
How To Enter
1. Create your Water Smart photo, video, written piece, artwork, or other submission.
2. Include a short caption or note about how you stay safe in, on, and around the water, which we can add if we share the post. (ie "[NAME] stays safe by/because...")
3. Submit your entry in one of two ways:
Post it on your own social media using #WaterSmartWednesday and tag us (but please know that we won't be able to share it if your account is private!), or
The Water Smart Wednesday feature with the most engagement by July 31 will be the winner, so if you see we've posted your submission, encourage your friends, family, and community to like, comment on, and share the post to boost your chances of winning!

Through sharing your story, you're helping to amplify lifesaving messages during the time of year when the risk of drowning is at its highest. Together, we can prevent tragedies and create a culture of water safety across Alberta and the Northwest Territories.

Please know that by entering in this contest, you hereby agree and give your permission for the Lifesaving Society Alberta and Northwest Territories Branch to use your submission for the purpose of display in the Society's public and internal communication platforms such as newsletters, social media, communiques, website, and annual reports.
