Note: The Lifesaving Society Alberta and Northwest Territories recognizes Instructors as Examiners. Instructors will have completed all the training and practical teaching and evaluation experience necessary for the Examiner appointment within the Instructor certification process. Some provincial branches may choose to deliver the instructor certification and examiner appointment as two separate processes.

Swimming & Lifesaving      
Swim Instructor The Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor/ Examiner Course focuses on preparing the instructor to teach and evaluate basic movement and swimming skills, strokes, and fitness. Candidates are introduced to key principles of learning and teaching and acquire proven teaching methods, a variety of skill and stroke development drills and correction techniques.  16 years old, current Bronze Cross or higher Attend a Swim/Lifesaving In-person recertification course
Lifesaving Instructor

Lifesaving Instructors/ Examiners are trained to teach and evaluate the three Canadian Swim Patrol Program awards, as well as the Bronze Star, Bronze Medallion, Bronze Cross, and Distinction certifications. Instructor/ Examiner candidates are trained in aspects of learning as well as various approaches required to teach water rescue, first aid, and related aquatic skills in the Canadian Lifesaving Program. Candidates also learn about long-range and short-term planning, class management, safety supervision and the principles of evaluation.

The Lifesaving Instructor/ Examiner certification is the prerequisite for all other Lifesaving Society instructor certifications. Certification in Alberta & Northwest Territories includes Advanced Instructor, Examination Standards Clinic, and Lifesaving CPR Instructor/ Examiner certifications.  

16 years old and Bronze Cross or higher

Recertifying Lifesaving Instructor/ Examiner award automatically recertifies Lifesaving CPR Instructor award

Education & Proficiency      
Education & Proficiency Instructor Education and proficiency instructors are certified to deliver Proficiency Programs, Attendant Programs and Lifeguard Skills Programs. An education and proficiency instructor may teach education and proficiency programs that he/she holds the candidate level award. Certification is current for two-years (2-years); recertification requires maintaining prerequisites. Lifesaving Instructor or higher  Attend a Swim/Lifesaving In-person recertification course
SwimAbilites Instructor SwimAbilities instructors are certified to deliver the SwimAbilities program. The Swimabilites instructor course prepares instructors to apply strategies for teaching candidates with special needs requiring additional support for skill development and safety routines. Certification is current for two-years (2-years); recertification requires maintaining prerequisites. SwimAbilities Proficiency, current instructor certification Attend a Swim/Lifesaving In-person recertification course.
Lifeguarding      
National Lifeguard Instructor

The National Lifeguard Instructor clinic prepares candidates to teach and evaluate National Lifeguard courses. Candidates learn specific strategies designed to train lifeguards in advanced rescue techniques, public relations issues and first aid, as well as how to present material that will prepare lifeguards for any major aspect of supervising the public in an aquatic setting. Candidates are required to complete an apprenticeship after the clinic.


Original Certification - Step-by-step:

  1. Candidates must apply to become a National Lifeguard Instructor.
  2. Once approved, attend and successfully complete the clinic 
  3. Apply to co-teach a course (Practicum)
  4. Once approved, teach at least 50% of a course
  5. After completion of practicum, have the supervising instructor (mentor) report your performance.

First Aid      
Lifesaving First Aid Instructor

Candidates must apply to become a Lifesaving First Aid Instructor. Please click here to access the Application Form.

Lifesaving first aid instructors teach and evaluate first aid knowledge and skills. Lifesaving first aid instructors deliver CPR and AED, Lifesaving Emergency First Aid and Lifesaving Standard First Aid. In addition a Lifesaving First Aid instructor may deliver: Aquatic Emergency Care, CPR-HCP and Oxygen Administration; if they hold the candidate level.

NOTE: Includes Lifesaving CPR Instructor certification.

16-hour Course: Approved Application, Lifesaving Instructor and Lifesaving Standard First Aid or Aquatic Emergency Care

32-hour Course: Approved Application, 18 years old  and Lifesaving Standard First Aid or Aquatic Emergency Care

Must attend an in-person recertification course
Lifesaving CPR Instructor

 Lifesaving CPR Instructors teach and evaluate CPR skills required by the community including family members, childcare workers, teachers, and lifeguards. Lifesaving CPR Instructors deliver the Society’s CPR-A, and -C programs , and AED. Certification is obtained through either a Lifesaving Instructor course or Lifesaving First Aid Instructor course.

Recertification Note: Lifesaving CPR Instructor/ Examiner award is automatically recertified with the recertification of Lifesaving Instructor/ Examiner, Lifesaving First Aid Instructor/ Examiner, or AEC Instructor/ Examiner.

Lifesaving Sport      
Lifesaving Sport Coach 1  The Lifesaving Sport Coach (former: Recreational Coach) course is designed to provide further training and support to Lifesaving Instructors who are teaching the JLC Program and coaching lifesaving clubs. Coaches will learn more about athlete development, designing club workouts, using equipment, and preparing to participate in or host competitive activities and events. Lifesaving Instructor

Lifesaving Sport Coach 1 recertification is for coaches to meet Leadership Level 2 competency performance criteria and be eligible to teach and evaluate Junior Lifeguard Club and Lifesaving Sport programs.

Officials Instructor  Officials Instructor is a practicum process designed to prepare appointed leadership volunteers to teach Community Official, Pool Official and Meet Manager and Referee. Officials instructors will train volunteers to fill the various officials roles at a sanctioned competition Lifesaving Instructor, One or more of Pool, Emergency Response, Open Water, Referee/Meet Manager certification, Proof of officiating experience – Pool and/or Emergency Response and/or Open Water Official with a minimum of 3 different roles at a minimum of 3 different Lifesaving Sport sanctioned competitions. Recommended Meet Manager/Meet Referee role at a minimum of 1 sanctioned competition

 Officials Instructor recertification is for Officials Instructors to meet Leadership Level 2 competency performance criteria and be eligible to teach and evaluate Community Official, Pool Official and Meet Manager and Referee programs.

First Responder      
First Responder Instructor  First Responder Instructor is a practicum process which prepares candidates to teach and evaluate First Responder Programs. Candidates are required to complete a practicum for Moving Water, Swiftwater, and Boat Rescue for First Responders. After successful completion of the practicum(s), the instructor candidate submits the completed Instructor Monitoring Form to the Society office for processing. First Responder Instructor Certifications are current for two-years Application, 18 years old, Current First Responder option (Moving Water, Swift Water Rescue, or Boast Rescue for First Responders), and experience.  
Boat Rescue for First Responder Instructor  The Boat Rescue for First Responders practicum prepares first responder instructors to teach and evaluate the Boat Rescue for First Responders program.  Application, Boat Rescue for First Responders, affiliation with a public safety organization (SAR, EMS, Fire, or Police) - Equivalencies will be considered, First Responder Instructor and successful completion of practicum

Boat Rescue for First Responder Instructor recertification is for Boat Rescue for First Responder Instructors to meet Leadership Level 3 competency performance criteria and be eligible to teach and evaluate the Lifesaving Society Boat Rescue for First Responder program.

Swiftwater Rescue Instructor The Swiftwater Rescue practicum prepares Instructors to teach and evaluate the Swiftwater Rescue program. Application, Swiftwater Rescue, First Responder Instructor and successful completion of practicum.

Swiftwater Rescue Instructor recertification is for Swiftwater Rescue Instructors to meet Leadership Level 3 competency performance criteria and be eligible to teach and evaluate Swiftwater Rescue 1 and 2 programs.

BOATTM      
BOAT Instructor

Boat Operator Accredited Training (BOAT)™ Instructors are trained through a Transport Canada approved instructor course to teach and evaluate the BOAT program and to administer Transport Canada Boating Safety Tests. BOAT Instructors learn how to present the required material to adequately prepare boaters to successfully complete a current Transport Canada Boating Safety Test.

Note: Updated Examinations are provided to Test Centres every second year.

All BOAT Exams must be administered following the current BOAT Administration and Test Protocol Guide included 

 

 BOAT Instructor recertification is for BOAT Instructors to meet Leadership Level 1 competency performance criteria and be eligible to teach and evaluate the Boat Operator Accredited Training (BOAT) program and administer Transport Canada Boating Safety Tests.
