POSITION OVERVIEW: We are seeking Lifeguard/Instructors who are energetic, personable and organized. Reporting to the Aquatic Centre Manager through an Aquatic Supervisor and under the leadership of an Aquatic Team Lead, you will provide safe, enjoyable aquatic opportunities for the public through the provision of lifeguarding and instructional services. You will instruct swimming lessons, lifeguard leisure, recreational and competitive swimmers, prevent injuries through public education and respond appropriately when injuries and incidents do occur. You will answer public inquiries, test and record water sample results, and clean aquatic and change room areas by providing janitorial services appropriate to your role. You will mentor volunteers and lifeguards- and instructors-in-training and serve as an advocate for children and other vulnerable members of our community. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: - Performs preventative lifeguarding duties in accordance with national standards and internal policies and procedures.
- Instructs classes according to program standards and internal policies and procedures utilizing continuous evaluation methods and completes associated administrative materials in a timely and professional manner.
- Prevents injuries by providing public education and responds appropriately when first aid treatment and/or emergency response/rescue is required.
- Monitors the general cleanliness and safety of the aquatic centre area including change rooms and immediately rectifies unclean and/or potentially hazardous conditions in a proactive nature, whenever possible .
- Carries out opening and closing procedures appropriately.
- Completely reports accurately and in a timely manner.
- Organizes and leads games and activities for members and guests.
- Sets up, takes down and safely stores equipment and bulkheads according to a prearranged schedule and does so in a timely and cooperative manner.
- Provides exceptional service to aquatic centre users.
- Conducts routine safety inspections.
- Coach, mentor and develop lifeguards- and instructors- in training and volunteers.
- Performs wrist band checks.
- Performs other duties associated with the safe and effective operation of the MacDonald Island Aquatic Centre as required by supervisory employees.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & SAFETY: - While performing the essential functions of this job some tasks involve the ability to exert very moderate physical effort, typically involving some combination of standing, standing at a height, sitting, sitting at a height, crouching, walking, climbing, swimming, performing work while wet and/or performing work while wet for extended periods of time.
- Emergency tasks and regular staff training events involve the performance of physically demanding work, which may involve some combination of running, climbing and/or swimming and may involve lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling heavy objects including distressed persons on land or in the water, performing work while wet and/or performing work while wet for extended periods of time.
- Lifeguard/Instructors must maintain the ability to demonstrate "Must See" and "Instructional Emergency Response" items from the appropriate governing body to the satisfaction of the employer at all times of scheduled employment.
- Safe lifting, carrying and rescue techniques and the use of a rescue aid in the water and the coordination of rescue with a second rescuer and a rescue aid in the water, when possible, are required by the employer.
- Safe use of employee protective equipment is required by the employer.
- All employees are responsible and accountable for MacDonald Island Parks' health and safety policy. All employees at every level should be familiar with the requirements of the Alberta Occupational Health and Safety legislation as it relates to their work processes.

Community and Protective Services Department Competition #201058 Instructor/Guard - Harbour Pool, Five (5) Permanent Part-Time Positions Located just 15 minutes northeast of Edmonton on the banks of the North Saskatchewan River, Fort Saskatchewan is home to more than 18,000 people. Residents enjoy the safe, clean and friendly neighbourhoods, spacious and well maintained parks with a 50km trail system, and excellent recreational facilities including the Dow Centennial Centre, a state-of-the-art recreation and culture facility. The City of Fort Saskatchewan, Community and Protective Services Department is seeking five (5) dynamic individuals who possess the enthusiasm and experience to ensure the on-going safety of our patrons, and to provide professional instruction in a variety of aquatic activities at Harbour Pool. The Instructor/Guards are required to have the minimum qualifications of Red Cross Water Safety Instructor, Standard First Aid/AEC and N.L.S. A copy of all current awards must accompany applications. You will be required to attend one (1) mandatory in-service per month, held at the Pool on Sunday mornings. Reliable transportation is necessary. The successful candidates will have a positive work attitude, and possess exceptional interpersonal and customer service skills.
